Stairlift Maintenance Tips

Five simple things you can do at home to keep your stairlift running quietly for years.

Key takeaways

  • Always park on a charge point
  • Don't switch off at the wall socket
  • Keep the rail clear of clutter
  • Wipe rail monthly with a dry cloth
  • Book an annual service

Five simple habits keep your stairlift quiet, reliable and out of the repair shop.

1. Park on charge

Always leave the lift on a charge point at the top or bottom of the rail. Otherwise the batteries drain even when not in use.

2. Don't switch off at the wall

The mains needs to be on permanently to keep batteries topped up. Switching off shortens battery life dramatically.

3. Keep the rail clear

Shoes, toys and post on the stairs trip the safety sensors and stop the lift mid-flight.

4. Wipe the rail

Once a month, wipe the rail with a dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Don't use sprays or oil.

5. Annual service

Once a year, book a 30-point service. Keeps the warranty valid and catches wear before it becomes a fault.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to oil the rail?

No — modern rails are self-lubricating, and oil attracts dust which causes wear. Leave that to the engineer at annual service.

What's the most common cause of breakdown?

Flat batteries from not parking on the charge point — every single day, in some homes. Park on charge!
