What looking after a stairlift actually involves
A stairlift is one of the few household appliances that genuinely needs an annual service. The motor, brake pads, drive belt, batteries and safety microswitches all wear, and skipping service is the single biggest cause of mid-life failures. It also voids most manufacturer warranties. Our annual servicing visit is a 30-point check — rail clean, lubrication, battery load-test, safety-sensor verification and a written service certificate — from £85 for a straight lift.
When something does go wrong, most faults fall into a small list: depleted batteries that no longer hold charge (typically 3–5 years of life), oxidised charge-point contacts on older Victorian terrace installs, a swivel-seat microswitch that's gone out of alignment, or a footplate cut-out triggered by something on the stairs. A repeating beep almost always means the seat or footrest isn't fully folded, or the lift isn't parked on a charge point. Our repairs team covers all makes — Stannah, Acorn, Brooks, Handicare — with same-day callouts across Salford and most spares carried in the van.
A new installation on a typical straight Salford staircase takes 2–3 hours. The rail bolts to the stair treads (never the wall), so there's no plaster damage, no structural work, and no Building Regulations approval needed. The charger plugs into a standard 13-amp socket fed from the ring main, and the electrical install is checked against BS 7671 (the IET Wiring Regulations). You stay in the house. Stairs remain usable throughout. The lift is ready by the time we leave. See the full timeline in our installation guide.
At the other end of a lift's life — usually when the user has moved on or upgraded — our removal service takes the unit away free of charge and pays cash for working models. Working lifts go back through our reconditioning workshop and become one of our reconditioned models; non-working units are stripped for parts and recycled. Every install starts with a free home survey — a real surveyor, not a salesperson, with a fixed written quote by email within 24 hours.
