Salford has one of the most varied housing stocks in Greater Manchester, and the right stairlift depends almost entirely on the staircase you've got — not the postcode. After ten years of measuring stairs across the city, the patterns are pretty clear.

The tightest fits are the Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Pendleton, Cheetham Hill and the old streets around Bury Old Road. Staircases here are often well under 70cm clear width, with a sharp turn at the bottom into a narrow hall. The answer is usually a slim-fit straight stairlift; where the bottom step lands tight against a doorway we'll fit a hinged or upright rail so the lift folds out of the way. Stand-on perch models exist for the rare cases where even slim-fit won't fit.

Inter-war semis in Prestwich, Monton and parts of Swinton are the easiest fits — wide, regular stairs with generous landings. A standard reconditioned straight model at £995 installed handles most of them. If there's a quarter-landing or gentle turn at the top, a curved lift with a short rail is usually the cleaner answer.

The challenging end is the new-build apartments around Deansgate, Spinningfields and Salford Quays, and the converted mill flats across the Northern Quarter. These often have tight mezzanine stairs or compact spirals where a stairlift simply isn't safe — the rail needs a clean running line and the user needs knee and foot clearance throughout the travel. We'll always tell you honestly at survey if the stairs aren't suitable, and point you toward a through-floor lift specialist instead.

Larger detached homes in Worsley and Pendlebury nearly always have half-landings, so they need a curved stairlift with a custom rail.
